Adherence to chronic medication is problematic in clinical practice. Nonadherence leads to poor disease control with a burden on patient quality of life and healthcare systems. Research shows that, on average, 50% of patients with a chronic condition are not adherent, with adherence estimates ranging from 17 to 80%. Drugs for asymptomatic chronic conditions are found to have especially low adherence rates. In several studies, the risk for nonadherence was shown to be highest in the first year after the start with chronic medication.
